What is Yin Yoga?
The balance of Yang yoga for joints (Not muscles). Yin yoga targets connective tissue in the body; it is meditative yoga, meridian yoga, surrender yoga, a needless acupuncture. Yin yoga is an inside job. Opposite of yang yoga’s you use your poses to move inside the body. Yin yoga has approximately 23 poses, which target the body from the belly button down. (Generally hips, pelvis and lower spine).
Most people believe more is better; meaning, the harder you go and the more effort you put into something the better the results. It is good to do some Yang yoga’s and exercise but there needs to be a balance, and Yin yoga is a perfect fit for every Body. |

Initially this style of yoga can seem quite boring, or soft, but yin practice is quite challenging because we hold our poses for long periods of time. (Anywhere from 1 – 20 minutes).
Once you experience Yin yoga you will realize you have been practicing only ½ of asana practice. But like anything; we do need the balance of both Yin and Yang practices. If all you did throughout your day was Yin you would collapse, as in Yin practice you bypass the muscles. Yang is anything repetitive, where as Yin is holding poses for periods of time.
The 3 basic principles of yin are: We come to our first edge into the pose (compassionate edge); we become still, and hold for time. During our Yin practice we notice we feel different from when we started our practice.
Personally I feel Yin has changed my life. I am very active and I do a lot of yang (repetitive exercises) throughout my day, the balance for me is yin asana practice. I feel restored and energized. For those who have experienced Yin practice please send in your articles for others to see.
